Sam Allardyce has told the Daily Star that Sunderland have had problems in defence throughout the season so far.

The Black Cats have conceded more goals than any other Premier League side so far this campaign.

Allardyce is famed for his organised approach, but even the 61-year-old boss has not been able to spark a dramatic improvement in Sunderland’s defensive record.

As a result, the Black Cats are set to target additions at the back in January - with Allardyce more satisfied with his forward line.

“We’ve been active in the transfer market for the last three weeks laying the foundations, and hopefully we’ll be successful in the next week,” he said in the Daily Star.

“We’ve had problems at the back all season, but if I can sort that out, we’ve got some goalscorers.

“We’ve got to realise that getting the defence to work as a solid unit is the way forward for us. It’s important to get new faces in to lift the spirits and make an impact.”

According to the Star, Jan Kirchhoff is set to become Sunderland’s first addition of the transfer window, and his arrival will give Allardyce more options at the back.
