The Italian defender brings competition at right back where Daniel Brosinski has played for the past two seasons. Coach Martin Schmidt has no new injury concerns and Elkin Soto has resumed light training as he recovers from summer knee surgery. Top scorer Yoshinori Muto is set to return to the starting eleven after being used as a substitute on Saturday.
Borussia central midfielder Granit Xhaka is serving the second of a three-match ban for being red carded in the 3-2 victory over Darmstadt prior to the winter break. Thorgen Hazard missed the 3-1 defeat against Dortmund last weekend with illness and is a slight doubt for Friday’s fixture. Tony Jantschke, Alvaro Dominguez, Andre Hahn, Nico Schulz and Patrick Herman are sidelined with long-term injuries.
